Reviewing 'Six Sonatas for Organ, BWV 525–530'
-
... Bergwerff’s interpretation has the perfect blend of
seriousness of intent and celebratory glow, as if trumpets are ablaze. Superb. This is a major release. Those with surround sound available will enjoy a sonic spectacular; but whatever the sound system, Bergwerff offers a reading among
those at the summit of this particular Bachian mountain.

BIOGRAPHY

With a profile defined by imagination, versatility, and a deep commitment to the evolving culture of the organ, AART BERGWERFF has established himself as a distinctive voice on the international stage. His work moves fluidly between the classical canon and innovative, interdisciplinary projects, reflecting a musical outlook that is both rooted and forward-looking.

Presentation and collaboration lie at the heart of Bergwerff’s artistry. He has developed a wide range of projects that enlarge the traditional recital format, from multimedia performances with video artist Jaap Drupsteen to cross-cultural productions such as East Meets West, developed with dervish dancer Kadir Sonuk and based on Simeon ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato. His collaborations with the female vocal ensemble Wishful Singing and trumpeter Eric Vloeimans further explore new sonic dimensions of this seminal work. In Mi Corazón, he brings the organ into dialogue with tango, highlighting his interest in connecting repertoire, performers, and audiences in compelling and unexpected ways.

As a performer, Bergwerff is recognized for the clarity, color, and architectural sense of his playing. His interpretations reflect a keen awareness of sound and space, paired with a natural ability to communicate about music in an engaging and accessible way. He appears regularly at major festivals and venues across Europe and is a frequent guest with leading orchestras, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonie Zuid-Nederland, and the Bamberger Symphoniker.

Bergwerff’s growing discography reflects both his affinity for core repertoire and his commitment to reimagining contemporary works. Recent releases include a critically acclaimed recording of Johann Sebastian Bach’s six trio sonatas, awarded the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 2025, noted for its transparency and stylistic insight. His recording of Canto Ostinato with Eric Vloeimans received a nomination for the Edison Klassiek Award, further highlighting his ongoing engagement with the music of Simeon ten Holt and his ability to present it in new and distinctive contexts.

Beginning in 2012, Bergwerff became organist of the Grote of Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-Kerk, where he has played a central role in the musical life of the historic instrument and its surrounding community, frequently performing concerts and festivals at home and abroad. Alongside his performing career, he is a dedicated pedagogue, serving on the faculty of the Rotterdam Conservatoire (Codarts University of the Arts), where he has taught organ and arranging since 1994.

Bergwerff studied organ, choral conducting, and church music at the Rotterdam Conservatoire, continuing with improvisation studies at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague under Bert Matter. He pursued advanced studies in Paris with Marie-Claire Alain and in northern Germany with Harald Vogel, earning the Prix de Virtuosité.

In 2003, he was awarded the silver medal of the Société Académique “Arts, Sciences et Lettres” in recognition of his contributions to French organ culture.
